Rules & objective

This edition follows Chidi Williams’s recorded childhood rules from Lagos; Ayo names cover other regional editions. Two rows of six pits, 4 seeds each, 48 total. Player 1 owns bottomA 1–A6, Player 2 topB 1–B6. Bottom left→right, top right→left form the counterclockwise circuit. Pick up all seeds from your own nonempty pit and sow one into each following pit. No capture stores on the circuit and no skipping the origin on long laps. Whenever a drop makes a pit hold exactly four, capture those four and empty it: if seeds remain in hand, the row owner gets them; if it is the last seed, the mover gets them on either row. If the last seed lands on an already occupied pit without making four, pick up that pit and continue relaying. A last seed in a previously empty pit or a last-seed four capture ends the move. If the opposing row is empty, choose a completed move leaving seeds there; if none can feed, the seeded side takes the board remainder and scores decide. If the next player’s own row is empty after a move, the seeded side also takes the remainder. After each whole sowing move, more than 24 captured wins immediately, without distributing remaining board seeds. No store extra turn, opposite-pit capture or Oware two/three capture.

Worked example

A pit reaching four during sowing is credited by its row owner. A final seed making four follows this edition’s separate last-seed rule.
